Literature Text

As the sun rose over Asgard the next day, the three members of royalty as well as the additional party of the Warriors Three stood in the throne room. The seven of them stood in their traveling cloaks, their provisions and supplies laying at their feet. The three friends of Thor were listening to the discussion raptly, Volstagg as rotund as ever, Fandral as aloof, and Hogun just as silent, perhaps even a bit more so.

“Explain to us again just how we are to travel without the Bifrost,” Thor spoke to the two elves.

“There are certain places throughout the realms where there are remnants of the time when all the realms used to be one,” Prince Caenr explained. “In these places there are small bridges, like spider’s threads, webbed throughout the realms, linking one realm to several others. This is ancient knowledge, which remains hidden from the other realms’ inhabitants’ by the elves. While this knowledge is undoubtedly useful, it is also extremely dangerous.”

            Thor nodded in understanding.

“I can see why,” the warrior Volstagg stated.

“Yes, we wouldn’t want anyone with an even remotely untrustworthy nature to be in possession of such powerful knowledge,” Fandral drawled, tossing a highly indicative glance in the elves’ direction.

Prince Caenr ignored this remark with notable grace and continued.

“In order to travel by these so-called ‘spider’s webs’, the elves have developed a method by which one—or seven in our case—can travel from one realm to another in safety.”

“And just how are we to do that?” Thor inquired.

“Unfortunately, while we are to assist you in this method of travel, we cannot give you all of the necessary information. It is the secret of the elves.”

            “What?!” Thor cried.

“I knew there had to be a drawback,” Fandral slurred with a distrustful tone.

“Please, your highness,” the boy’s father began, his tone soft and appeasing. “Try to understand. What my son means to say is that we cannot go about telling such a grave secret blindly. It must be protected.”

“Had you and your son always behaved in a strictly honorable manner in my knowledge, I might be tempted to believe you in that your reasons are truly as noble as you claim. But, as it is, I cannot agree to this as blindly as you might wish me to. I am not such a simpleton as to trust you two a second time only to be proven wrong yet again,” Thor’s voice rumbled.

As Thor stated this, his figure was truly imposing. His wide shoulders were squared, his eyes were narrow and shrewd, and his voice was commanding. The two elves shrunk slightly at this; even the three warriors looked at their old friend in slightly alarmed awe. Pausing for a moment, however, Thor then softened his tone and allowed a more understanding edge to enter into his voice.

“However, I can understand the wish to protect such an ancient secret from unfriendly forces. That being said, I will allow that you need bestow the knowledge on no one but me. I swear upon my honor that I will not share this knowledge with anyone but the All-Seer, Heimdall. He is of the most trustworthy stock and would have the power to see if we required assistance. He would then have the ability to come to our aid.”

There was a barely contained murmur of disagreement from the Warriors Three at this overly generous offer.

“Er, y-your highness,” King Alfi stuttered. “I cannot say that such a thing would be necessary or permissible! There would be no need for you or anyone else to know the particulars of inter-realm travel on this expedition. My son and I would be perfectly capable of helping you and the esteemed warriors escape if necessary.”

“And it is that sole freedom of yours which makes me wary,” Thor stated gravely. “Because of your previous deceit and insistent malarkey, how can I be certain that you would not abandon us, utterly stranded, on Jotunheim?”

The elves looked to each other nervously, not knowing how to counter such a reasonable claim. Not knowing how to respond, the elves said nothing, but appeared thoroughly uncomfortable. They could sense that they were not going to succeed in ending this in the way they had originally planned.

“Good sirs,” Thor continued after a lengthy pause. “We both have loved ones we wish to save. On this quest, let us think of nothing else but their safety and let us work together. Perhaps, at the end of it all, we shall be on more agreeable terms with each other. Come now, what say you?”

With a sigh, King Alfi lowered his cold blue eyes in defeat and nodded wearily.

“Very well,” he acceded. “Very well. Then take us back to Heimdall so that we may tell you and the All-Seer how it is done. Everyone else must stay here in the meantime.”

“Well said,” Thor nodded, grateful for the king’s cooperation. “My friends,” he addressed the Three, “wait here for our return.”
